Maria Nolan, the Chief Officer of the Multilateral Fund Secretariat based in Montreal, today announced the release of A Culture of Success, an interactive video on CD, to mark to the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.   A Culture of Success was produced by the Fund Secretariat with support from Montréal International. The CD contains not only an overview video, but also another 90 minutes of video, text and images that can be accessed through an interactive menu.

A Culture of Success tells the story of the Multilateral Fund and its achievement in the words of some of the people who made the Fund a success.   Twenty-four interviewees talk about the Multilateral Fund, lessons learned and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.  Their dedication and passion is clear and is summed up in the words of Mr. Wen Wurui of China: “One Fund, one dream, the Fund makes the dream come true”.

Further Information

The Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol began its operation in 1991. The main objective of the Multilateral Fund is to assist developing country parties to the Montreal Protocol whose annual per capita consumption and production of ozone-depleting substances is less than 0.3 kg to comply with the control measures of the Protocol. These countries are referred to as Article 5 countries.  The Fund is managed by an Executive Committee chaired in 2007 by Mr. Philippe Chemouny of Canada. The Committee is assisted by the Fund Secretariat which is based in Montreal.  Activities are implemented by four international agencies (UNDP, UNEP, UNIDO, World Bank) and a number of bilateral implementing agencies of donor countries.  Responsibility for overseeing the operation of the Fund rests with the Executive Committee comprising seven members each from Article 5 countries (China, Guinea, Jordan, Mexico, Sudan, Saint Lucia and Uruguay in 2007) and non-Article 5 countries (Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Italy, Japan, Sweden and the USA in 2007).  Since 1991, the Multilateral Fund has approved activities including industrial conversion, technical assistance, training and capacity building worth over US $2 billion.

Montréal International:  The result of a private/public partnership, Montréal International receives the combined support of the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (Montréal Metropolitan Community) and the City of Montréal. The organization’s mission is to contribute to economic development in Metro Montréal and to enhance its international status. The International Organizations Department at Montréal International is devoted exclusively to relations with international organizations and, among others, offers them hospitality services to assist them and their foreign personnel in settling in the Montréal region.
